Last, Index and Mark Price — and your PnL

Different prices answer different questions. Compare the reference used in each calculation.

1

Identify the price

Last Price is the latest matched trade. Index Price is the contract’s market reference. Mark Price is used for position valuation and margin-related calculations under the contract rules. These prices do not have to be equal.

2

Separate open and closed results

Unrealized PnL belongs to an open position and changes as its reference price moves. Realized PnL relates to completed or settled activity. Use the actual entry and exit fills, size and contract specifications when checking a closed result.

3

Check units, costs and period

Compare the same asset or settlement currency, position size and time period. Determine whether the displayed result includes trading fees and funding. A return percentage also depends on the capital or margin used as its calculation base.

Before you continue

An unrealized gain is not the same as an available withdrawal balance. A price on the chart may differ from the reference used for margin or liquidation.
